Sermon Notes: “Why Did God Create the World?” by John Piper
God created the world for His Glory. (Isaiah 43:6-7)
God created man so the world would be filled with people who reflect God
Genesis 1:27: (point of image is to display and glorify the original) – When we do or say anything, it is about God; man often reads the Bible, prays, and everything else from a perspective. of self (what I should do) rather than what glorifies God
God created us to know Him, love Him, and to share Him. He created the universe to declare His glory, and to show us His attributes.
The great tragedy of the universe is that man has exchanged the Glory of an immortal for images resembling a mortal man. (Romans 1:23)
It is all about glorifying God and no other. We deserve His wrath and anger, but He refines us and restores us for His Namesake (Isaiah 48:9-11)
For us to glorify God, it does not mean that we are “making” Him glorious or making Him look better; it means that we are to be a display that He is glorious, for us to abide in Him because He is glorious, for us to make much of Him because He is glorious. We reflect and call attention to God.
Do not treat the word glorify like the word “beautify.”
“God is most glorified in you, when you are most satisfied in Him.”
God did not create us because He was lonely. He had the infinite companionship of the Trinity.
God wants His glory to permeate our entire lives – what we do, how we speak, etc.
When you know that God created this world for His Glory, you know something about everything – that the most important outcome if anything and everything we may come across is that it glorifies God
You not only know something about everything when you know that everything is for God’s Glory, you know the most important reason for everything.
Apex of the Glory of God is the Grace of God.
God’s wrath serves as the revelation of the riches of His Glory through the vessels of His Mercy. Grace is the pinnacle of the mountain of His Mercy
God planned that Grace would be the pinnacle of His Glory, before creation.
Grace was not an afterthought in response to Adam and Eve’s sin.
Grace came to us through Jesus Christ (Ephesians 1:5)
God called us to a Holy Calling in Christ Jesus before the universe was made. 2 Timothy 1:9
Is the Glory of God the biggest treasure as you look into your future?
Is the Glory of God’s Grace the sweetest news to your soul?
Is the Glory of the cross the saddest and happiest reality in your life?
There will be a day when we can look upon our Lord without sin.
